Irish Echo - John J. Sweeney, a son of immigrants from County Leitrim, started in the Bronx and rose to the heights of the AFL-CIO presidency, was honored Monday at Flushing Meadows Corona Park on Field 7.

July 29, 2026 - Victor Mooney of Goal 2 Goal, stepped onto the executive floor of the Uniform Firefighters Association (UFA), Local 94. He was there simply to bow his head and speak from the heart.


"Today, I say thank you to the leadership of Local 94, active firefighters, and thousands of retirees," Mooney said, his voice carrying the weight of deep, enduring gratitude.


The sentiment traced back to a poignant moment on July 17. On that scorching summer day, a beautifully arranged wreath was left for Goal 2 Goal at the iconic Unisphere in Flushing Meadows Corona Park. It was retrieved and meticulously positioned on Field 7 as a powerful monument of respect and remembrance for AFL-CIO President Emeritus John J. Sweeney.
